From Safe Haven to Eternal Rest: Christian’s Journey
The story of Samantha and Mason Pennington is one that exemplifies love, faith, and divine timing in the face of unimaginable challenges. This high school sweetheart couple from Arkansas always knew they wanted to adopt, even as they navigated through the difficulties of infertility and multiple rounds of IVF. In 2022, they officially became licensed as an open adoptive home through the Arkansas Department of Child Services, specifically choosing the adoptive-only route rather than fostering.
Little did they know that their lives would forever change in 2023 when they received a call about a baby who had been surrendered in a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Benton Fire Department. At the time of the call, Samantha and Mason were enjoying a hot air balloon ride in Colorado, completely unaware that this moment would mark the beginning of their journey as parents. The synchronicity was striking – when they first saw their baby in the hospital, his nursery pod had been decorated with hot air balloons by the nursing staff, a beautiful coincidence that seemed to confirm this child was meant to be theirs.
They named him Christian, inspired by overhearing a nurse using that name, and immediately fell in love with the perfect baby boy lying in the hospital pod. However, their joy was soon tempered with concern as medical tests revealed Christian had a rare genetic disorder called pseudo-Zellwegers, clinically known as D-bifunctional protein deficiency. This condition meant that the peroxisomes in his cells didn't function properly, leading to an inability to process fatty acids and causing seizures, muscle issues, and neurological problems.
Despite the devastating prognosis, with doctors placing Christian on hospice care and indicating that the average lifespan for children with this condition was about one year, the Penningtons committed to giving him the best possible life for whatever time he had. Samantha, being a pharmacist, was uniquely qualified to manage his complex medication regimen, sometimes administering up to 30 doses of medication daily. Mason was fortunately working from home following a back procedure, allowing him to bond with Christian, holding him during the workday as they watched ballgames together.
For the first few months, Christian thrived beyond expectations. He smiled, babbled "mama," and scored well on his developmental evaluations. The Penningtons held onto hope that perhaps their son would be the exception, living longer than the typical prognosis for his condition. They took him to physical therapy, occupational therapy, and all his medical appointments, fighting alongside him every step of the way.
Around Christmas, however, Christian's condition began to deteriorate. His seizures increased in frequency—sometimes up to 40 per day—and the light in his eyes began to dim. Over the following months, he was hospitalized multiple times for pneumonia and later COVID-19. Eventually, after several episodes requiring CPR and emergency care, Christian's little body could no longer fight. At 11 months old, after a beautiful celebration of his birthday, and following thoughtful discussions with his medical team, the Penningtons made the heartbreaking decision to remove life support.
True to his fighting spirit, Christian held on for six to eight hours after being extubated, much longer than doctors expected. Samantha and Mason lay beside him on the hospital bed as he peacefully passed away, having loved him completely during his short time on earth. Now, they are channeling their grief into purpose by raising funds for a new Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station Number One in Malvern, Arkansas, dedicated to Christian's memory—bringing their journey full circle from receiving a child from a baby box to creating one that might save another life.
The Penningtons remain open to adoption, having already fostered other children since Christian's passing. Their story is a powerful testament to how even the briefest of lives can leave an indelible impact on a community and how divine orchestration can be seen in the most heartbreaking of circumstances. As Samantha beautifully expressed, she pictures Christian in heaven, running and playing—something he never had the chance to do on earth—and embracing Jesus with open arms.
